Authorities are investigating what caused a car accident over the weekend that killed a 14-year-old boy.

The boy, who lived in Garden Grove, was a passenger in an Acura Integra with other teenagers that collided with a Cadillac Escalade Saturday and then crashed into a light pole just before 5 p.m. Saturday on Bushard Street at Banning Avenue. He was pronounced dead at about 8:14 p.m. Saturday.

A preliminary investigation indicates that the Acura driver sped through a stop sign at Banning and collided with the Cadillac, police said.

A 17-year-old girl who was also in the Acura suffered severe injuries while three other passengers sustained minor injuries. The teens were taken to hospitals in Santa Ana and Orange.

The Acura driver, Ty Van Nguyen, 18, of Garden Grove, suffered cuts on the face, legs and arms but his injuries were not considered life-threatening, police said.

Devin Miller, 39, of Huntington Beach, and his family were not injured when the Acura hit the Cadillac he and his family were in.
