Tennessee Williams play to debut in April

The Promiscuous Assemblage, Gallimaufry Performing Arts’ professional repertory company, will present Tennessee Williams’ “The Glass Menagerie” April 4, 5, 11 and 12 at the Forum Theatre, 650 Laguna Canyon Road.

Performance times are 8 p.m. on all four days, with matinees at 2 p.m. April 5 and 12.

Ticket prices are $15 – $20 for general admission reserved seats, and $10 – $15 for students and seniors.

Based on his own short story, “Portrait of a Girl in Glass,” “The Glass Menagerie” is a tribute to his troubled sister, Rose (renamed Laura in the play), and was Williams’ first play produced on Broadway.

The cast includes Julie Gibson Josephson as Amanda, L. B. Fisher as Tom, Vanessa Ray as Laura and Matthew Sikes as Jim O’Conner.

Student exhibition to open at college

“The Best of the Best,” an annual juried exhibition of original artwork by the undergraduate students of Laguna College of Art & Design, will show April 1–27 in the college gallery, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

A free, public opening reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. April 3.

The exhibition comprises of a wide range of mediums, expression and skill that is representative of the five major fields of study at the college: drawing and painting, illustration, graphic design, animation, and game art.

All students are invited to submit work, which is then juried collectively by the faculty and judges from the Pacific Art Foundation. The juried exhibition represents the best work of the students at Laguna College of Art & Design.

The student award reception will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. April 10 in the college gallery. Cash prizes will be awarded to honor the student artworks that are juried as the best in each of the following award categories: animation, drawing and painting, graphic design, illustration, game art, hybrid, foundation and sculpture.

Longi to open live-work center

Artist Louis Longi will host a reception at his studio that will introduce his new work along with his collaborative LONG(I) LIVE / WORK, an artist resource center in Laguna Canyon. The event will be from 6 to 10 p.m. April 12; those interested in attending are asked to RSVP to (949) 838-7444.

Longi has focused his art on “life’s human will,” and contributing to the cultural diversity in the community of Laguna Beach. His sculptures are one-of-a-kind originals that have built an expansive collector base along with increasing his exposure through public art in cities throughout the United States.

LONG(I) LIVE / WORK, an artist resource center, is a dream building project that is currently under development for introduction to the city in late April.

The 16,000-square-foot facility will be Longi’s home and studio, along with eight other units dedicated to artists for live–work studios.

The facility will house a large common fabrication studio and creative resources for all tenants.

New Art-A-Fair artists announced

Two Laguna Beach locals have been selected to join the Art-A-Fair for this summer’s 42nd season.

Richard Copeland, a 30-year resident of Laguna, will be exhibiting his oil paintings. Copeland is primarily a self-taught artist and depicts a wide range of subjects, including animals, sports, still life, seascapes and Western themes.

KC Horng moved to the U.S. four years ago and to Laguna less than a year ago. Her specialty is Chinese brush painting, which she studied with masters in her native China as well as in California.

Copeland and Horng were chosen from more than 100 hopefuls who traveled from Orange, Los Angeles, San Diego and Riverside counties, as well as many other states, including Hawaii, Nebraska, Texas, New York, Arizona, Washington and Nevada. A total of 20 new artists were selected by the nine-person jury, consisting of professional fine artists and master craftsmen.

Gallery to host artist reception

Whitney Gallery in Laguna Beach, 350 N. Coast Hwy., is hosting a wine reception for artist Peggi Kroll-Roberts from 6 to 9 p.m. April 3 in conjunction with the exhibition of her new oil paintings.

College faculty does industry podcast

ON Networks recently featured Laguna College of Art & Design illustration faculty member Brian Apthorp on an episode of For Art’s Sake.

The new Internet video show is designed to expose viewers to modern art and the insights, inspirations and talent of the artists who create it. Each show features one-on-one interviews with artists and a behind-the-scenes look at their work and creative processes.

In his role as a subject as well as helping produce the series, Apthorp worked side-by-side with his wife and producer, Lori, to conduct interviews, advise on camera set-up, design backgrounds and lighting, and provide editing input to achieve a smooth and cohesive finished product.
