Newport Mesa Sailors 62 Chino Valley Rimshakers 53: The Sailors (14-6) finished up the weekend tournament with a big come-from-behind win over the Rimshakers. Connor Kelly hit a game-tying three-pointer to send the game into overtime in the fourth quarter after the Sailors were down by as many as 18 points in the third. Kelly, who played limited minutes due to an ankle injury in the previous game came off the bench in the fourth to provide a huge spark with five quick points and an assist in the fourth. Blake Grable also hit a momentum-changing three-pointer in the final period to cut the huge deficit to five capping off a 22-point fourth quarter.

In overtime, Blake Motal grabbed five rebounds while Robbie Rettig, Jackson Pries and Reid Meckler hit the final nine points keeping the Rimshakers scoreless in the final period to seal the victory for the Sailors who lost the opening games of the tournament to Laguna Hills (12-4) and Brea (15-1).

Nick Hannah and Drew Olson played key minutes for the Sailors combining for eight rebounds, three steals, four assists and six points while defending the Rimshakers top scorers throughout the game.

Girls’ Under 12

Newport Beach 7, Costa Mesa 2 (Spring Select Team): Newport’s Chargers opened the Spring Select Season with an impressive 7-2 victory over Costa Mesa. Newport started quickly with goals from Kenya Avila, Kate Mcfetters and Kathryn De La Torre with assists from Megan Daly and Britney Myers. Myers and Leah Castillo added goals to increase the advantage to 5-0. After Costa Mesa cut the lead to three, McFetters and Avila added another goal each to close out the scoring. Berkley Vanoostendorp had an assist and played solid defense. Katelyn Mead played exceptional defense and had support from Emily Cook and Jenna Nulty. Lea Phillips, McKenna Johnson controlled play from their midfield positions. Tyler Stupor was perfect in goal as she shut out the opponents for three quarters before being substituted out.

Boys Under 12

Newport Mavericks 4, Costa Mesa 1 (Spring Select): The Newport Mavericks had a successful day at The Farm defeating Costa Mesa of Region 120. Brothers Emmanuel and Jehu Jogwe controlled play for much of the game with Emmanuel providing two assists and Jehu netting two scores. The Mavericks defense was anchored by sweeper Dominik Folkner and keeper Brett Tafoya who shut out Costa Mesa over the first three quarters. In the end, additional offense from Baron Davis and Byron Gutierrez, who each scored a goal, proved too much for the neighboring region. Thanks to the mid-field play of Sawyer Farmer, Riley Gaddis, and Peter Seidner, Newport was able to control the pace of play on its way to a 2-1 record.

Girls Under 10

Little Breakers 2, Corona del Mar 2 (Spring Select)

Bonita Creek Park: The game opened with the little Breakers’ forward line of Destry Comp, Kiana Ghamari, and Haley Martinez pushing immediately into Corona del Mar territory. CdM pushed back and scored the first goal. In the second quarter, Siena Ward at center striker passed forward to an empty field, but following-up her pass quickly, she was able to recover the ball for a shot and score. Paige Fultz at left forward, worked the CdM defense hard for several shots on goal. CdM scored what would be their last goal on a penalty kick.
