Student appears in repertory production

Elisabeth Smith of Laguna Beach will have three roles in the upcoming South Coast Repertory Junior Players production of “The Jungle Book,” playing Saturday, Sunday and April 5-6.

The Junior Players (grades 5-8) are one of two young ensemble groups composed of students who have been chosen through audition after at least two years in SCR’s Theatre Conservatory.

Elizabeth will play a Wolf Club, Funky and Kite.

Foundation grants available

The American Assn. of University Women, Laguna Beach Foundation invites Laguna Beach non-profit organizations to submit an application for grants from $200 to $750 that address needs related to AAUW’s mission.

Funding requests must relate to the education and needs of women and girls or provide information to educate and benefit the public on these issues, promote lifelong education and positive societal change.

Successful applicants must agree to submit a report documenting outcomes achieved through this funding.

Local foundation hosts event for at-risk youth

The Believe In Sobriety Foundation will sponsoring a BIS Kids event April 5 and 6 at the Corbin Senior Center in Santa Ana.

The event is for children ages 7 to 12 in the Santa Ana area whose lives have been affected by drugs and alcohol.

The two-day workshop is a proactive prevention event. The children will learn about addiction in age-appropriate language, as well as self-care skills, using games, play, prizes, role playing, music and art.

The workshop is modeled after the Childrens Program at the Betty Ford Center.

Water scholarship deadline looms

College-bound high school seniors have until April 15 to apply for a South Coast Water District scholarship.

Each year, the District awards $500 scholarships to college-bound high school seniors who live in the District’s service area and can demonstrate their involvement in public service, community service and/or environmental activities.

Applicants must also write a 500-word essay about water care from topics provided.

Applications are available on the District’s website, www.scwd.org, or by calling (949) 499-4555, ext. 3153. Applicants can also call this number to verify that they live in the District’s service area.

Last year, the District awarded five $500 scholarships.

Past Laguna Beach High School recipients include Margaux Thomas, Robert Harman, Jr. and Marshall Thomas, last year’s recipient.

Volunteers sought to teach about finances

USA Freedom Corps has announced a new Financial Literacy Volunteer Initiative designed to mobilize volunteers who can help Americans improve their financial literacy, and assist those facing foreclosure with tools to help them keep their homes.

Through its K-12 financial literacy programs, Junior Achievement offices across the country provide volunteer opportunities which help educate youth about effective money management skills.

Easter Egg Hunt delights children

The Laguna Beach Parents Club held its Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt March 22 at Moulton Meadows Park.

More than 65 families turned out for the event.

Teens create concert for cancer research

Laguna Beach High School students will be performing at their 4th annual City Of Hope Concert, with all of the proceeds donated to the City of Hope Medical Center’s cancer research, at 4:30 p.m. Saturday in the Forum Theatre on the Festival of Arts grounds.

The students have raised more than $13,000 in the past three years.

The Help for Hope Concert will include vocal numbers by sophomores Alison Azera, Nia Evans and McKenna Nokes.

Three bands will also be on stage: “Epiphany”, “Jill’s Bedroom”, and a new trio of talented musicians: Jake Johnson, Graham Harris and Charlie Jungheim.

Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for adults.

Character Counts founder to visit

Michael Josephson of Character Counts and radio commentary fame will speak at the Artists’ Theatre at 7 p.m. April 16.

Parents and school staff will learn how to develop the Six Pillars of Character in their kids, and enjoy a unique opportunity to hear one of the nation’s renowned ethicists in person.

Admission to the event, organized by the El Morro PTA and sponsored by the district, is $5. The Boys and Girls Clubs staff will provide child care at the high school campus during the event for $5 per child.
