Sunday’s 25th Spirit Run to benefit local schools

Organizers of the 25th annual Spirit Run are planning to share race proceeds with all Newport-Mesa schools that participate this year.

In addition to benefiting Andersen, Harbor View, Eastbluff, Newport Coast and Lincoln Elementary schools, Spirit Run organizers plan to give $5 from every entry to the Newport-Mesa school he or she identifies, allowing more than 25 schools to possibly benefit.

This year’s Spirit Run will take place Sunday, adjacent to Edwards Big Newport 6 in Fashion Island.

Race day registration begins at 6 a.m. and the first race takes off at 7 a.m. Over the past 24 years, the Spirit Run has raised more than $1 million for educational programs in the Newport-Mesa area.

The Spirit Run has added a competitive youth 5K for ages 14 and under for the first time.

The event will also include an adult 5K and 10K, and quarter- to one-mile races for children ages 4-12.
