HATE CRIMES IN THE O.C.

The April 16 luncheon meeting of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council will hear a presentation on “Hate Crimes In Orange County” with James Armendaris, senior human relations specialist for the Orange County Human Relations Council.

The County Board of Supervisors will hear the report on 2007 from the Human Relations Council the day before, so this will be the community’s first opportunity to hear it first hand and ask questions. The meeting will be held Newport Beach Stake, Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, 2150 Bonita Canyon Drive, Newport Beach. A tour of the Temple grounds will follow the luncheon. $10 per person with reservation by 5 p.m. April 14, $12 thereafter. Make reservations by e-mailing nmiinterfaith@aol.com or call (714) 921-18665. More information is available at www.nmiinterfaith.org.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

The first award of the Returning Combat Veteran’s Scholars was given by Newport Harbor Exchange Club past president Bill Bechtel to Loadmaster Kurt Kohler who will enter the Police Academy at Golden West College. Kohler was accompanied by Bob Mosley, Police Academy director, when the check was presented.

WORTH REPEATING

Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport Mesa Irvine Interfaith Council:

“It is better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.”
