Cal Poly Invitational

SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine senior Dayne Comrie won the 200 meters in 21.85 seconds Saturday.

Teammate Oliver Plattner placed second in 21.95 seconds.

The Anteaters’ Matt Lahti finished second in the hammer throw with a toss of 174 feet, 7 1/4 inches for the fifth-best mark in school history. He placed fifth in the shot put with a mark of 46-7 1/4 .

George Hernandez finished second in the 400 meters (49.24), Ryan Hershey was third in the high jump at 6-4 3/4 , and Justin Carter also picked up a third-place finish in the triple jump at 45-2 3/4 .

In women’s competition, UCI’s Candice Proctor was second in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:18.61.

Alisha Misiata finished third in the shot put (48-6 1/4 ), fourth in the discus throw (149-2 1/2 ) and fifth in the hammer throw (143-11 1/2 ).

Madeline Leduc had fourth-place showings in the long jump (17-3 1/4 ) and the triple jump at 38-6 1/2 as she improved on her fifth-best mark in UCI history.

Cal Poly’s Sharon Day, a Costa Mesa High product, won the high jump in 5-11 1/2 . It was the senior’s first meet back after taking second at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Day also took sixth in the javelin with a mark of 123-2 1/4 , a new personal best, was eighth in the shot put at 35-10 1/4 and anchored a winning 1,600 relay squad with a 55.9 split.

The Anteater teams compete at the Stanford Invitational Friday and Saturday.

Point Loma Invitational

SAN DIEGO — Vanguard University sophomore Kelsie Davis won the high jump with a personal-best clearance of 5 feet, 3 3/4 inches Saturday.

Sophomore teammate Burgandy Rhines finished second in the high jump at 5-1 3/4 . Davis finished fifth in the triple jump with a mark of 33-8, a personal record.

Rhines, along with freshmen Kaylee Leadley, Allie Armando and Marin Lowder took sixth in the 400 relay in a season-best 52.76 seconds.

On the men’s side, sophomore Mike Hartanov finished second in the 1,500 meters in 4 minutes, 3.52 seconds, a personal record. Hartanov was seventh in the 800 in a season-best 1:59.28.

SWIMMING

NCAA Championships

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. — UC Irvine senior Eddie Erazo finished eighth in the 200-meter butterfly Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.

Erazo swam a time of 1:45.20 in the finals finishing in eighth. He swam a UCI record time of 1:43.71 Saturday afternoon to qualify sixth in the preliminaries.

Erazo is UCI’s first All-American in men’s swimming and diving since current Anteater head coach Brian Pajer did it in 1990.

The Anteaters finished tied for 34th at the NCAA Championships with 11 points.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC San Diego def. UC Irvine

LA JOLLA — Tritons’ freshman setter Phil Bannan, a Corona del Mar High product, recorded 45 assists, four kills and seven digs to lead UCSD to a 33-31, 25-30, 24-30, 30-25, 15-11 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation upset win over the No. 9-ranked Anteaters Saturday.

Bannan also helped guide the Tritons to their ninth victory of the season, which is a school record. Saturday’s win also marked the first time UCSD has swept an MPSF opponent.

Jon Steller led UCI (12-13, 8-10 in the MPSF) with 22 kills, while Jordan DuFault added 14 kills. Aaron Harrell recorded 13 kills in 13 attempts, while Brent Asuka had a match-high 16 digs for UCI.

Jason Spangler led UCSD (9-15, 5-13) with 24 kills.

BASEBALL

COSTA MESA — The Lions’ Christopher Carls pitched a complete game to improve to 5-0 in the seven-inning second game of the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Tyson Leighton went three for four with one run for Vanguard (15-17, 6-14 in conference) in Game 1. Zachary Falk went two for two with an RBI in the first game for the Lions, while Jason Machado hit a home run.

Joe Chavarria led The Master’s (22-9-1, 10-9) in the first game, going three for four with two RBIs.
