Collision shuts down power lines

A Costa Mesa intersection was shut down for at least two hours Monday after a car slammed into a power pole, knocking out power to residents in the area, authorities said today.

At about 5:30 p.m., a Toyota Camry and Nissan collided in the Newport Boulevard and Wilson Street intersection, sending the Camry slamming into a power pole off the southbound Newport Boulevard lanes. The collision probably made some of the high-voltage power lines touch and short out, said Costa Mesa Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Diamond.

Authorities did not immediately know who caused the accident or if anyone was injured.
