Crash shuts down power for hundreds of residents

More than 260 Costa Mesa residents were without power until early Tuesday after a car crash the day before caused a short in some high-voltage wires, Southern California Edison officials said.

Police had few details on the 5:30 p.m. Monday crash. A car somehow ended up through a chain link fence and into electrical equipment off the southbound Newport Boulevard lanes at Wilson Street, police said.

The intersection was shut down for at least two hours, fire officials said.

Edison officials said up to 4,100 customers were without power for about 30 seconds, but between 260 and 265 people were without power until about 4:50 a.m. Tuesday.

The crash probably made some of the high-voltage power lines touch and short out, said Costa Mesa Fire Department Battalion Chief Kevin Diamond.

No one was injured in the crash, Sgt. Bryan Glass said.
