Marina wins 4 to take tournament

The Marina High baseball team won four games over a four-day period to win the championship of the Brian Hamilton Tournament in Chino.

The Vikings defeated Damien (7-3), West Covina (5-4) and Chaffey (10-0) before capping their tournament run with a 5-2 title-clinching victory over host Chino.

In the tournament final, sophomore Robert Chavarria doubled and senior Kyle Myers hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to break a tie and put Marina up 3-1.

In the sixth, juniors Pablo Contreras and Tyler Rinker both doubled to key a two-run inning that upped the Vikings’ lead to 5-1.

Paul Strong was strong on the mound, with a complete-game performance that included 12 strikeouts and just one walk as the junior improved his record to 3-0.

Marina hosts Newport Harbor Friday in a 3:15 p.m. Sunset League game.

In other baseball action

Edison won its final game at the Anaheim Lions Tournament March 26 by defeating Thousand Oaks, 7-3, at Glover Stadium in Anaheim.

The Chargers had 11 hits off three pitchers with Josh Lesinski hitting a solo home run in the third inning, Donald Sneed doubled and singled, and Eric Snyder tripled.

Bryan Adams earned his second win of the season for Edison, which hosts Fountain Valley Friday in Sunset League play.

Ocean View dropped its final two games at the Anaheim Lions Tournament to finish with a 1-4 record at the three-day event.

The Seahawks headed into the seventh inning holding a three-run lead on Long Beach Poly but eventually lost 9-7 to the Jackrabbits. Then came a 7-0 shutout loss to Paso Robles.

Ocean View got its one tournament win over Riordan of San Francisco, winning 7-2 in a game where sophomore Nick Schulenburg earned his first varsity win.

Senior James Miller went two for three, and senior Sean Burleson had a home run among two hits in the win over Riordan.

“We are struggling to find ourselves,” Ocean View Coach Shane Borowski said. “In baseball, like life, you have to give it 100%, all the time, no exceptions. We haven’t found out how to do that yet, and our record indicates as such.”

Ocean View returns to Golden West League play today with a 3:15 p.m. game at Santa Ana.

Huntington Beach went 2-2 at the San Luis Obispo Tournament. The Oilers defeated Agoura (7-5) and Foothill of Pleasanton (12-1) before dropping consecutive games to host San Luis Obispo (7-3) and Amador Valley (9-3).
