Bookstore plans poetic evening reading

In honor of National Poetry Month, Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Ave., has invited four poets, including Laguna Beach resident and artist Kate Buckley, to read their poems, autograph their books, and respond to audience questions beginning at 6:30 p.m. April 16.

Douglas Jacobs will read from “The Rhymes of Love and Reason,” Paul Kareem Tayyar from “Everyday Magic,” Christine Swaberg from “Who Walks Among the Trees with Charity,” and Kate Buckley from “A Wild Region.”

Chamber and Rotary to host fundraiser

The Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Civic Assn. and the Rotary Club of Laguna Beach will hold their third annual wine tasting and scholarship fundraising event, Grapes for Grads, from noon to 4 p.m. April 27 at Tivoli Too, 777 Laguna Canyon Road.

Along with a selection of local and regional wines available to taste, there will be live entertainment, an art exhibition, a live painting demonstration from the students at LCAD, an opportunity drawing and a silent auction.

Food provided by A La Carte Gourmet will be available at a nominal cost.

Tickets for the event are $30 per person presale and $35 per person at the door.

The Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club have co-created this event to support local students in their academic and creative endeavors by providing scholarships to four Laguna Beach students.

Last year, $8,500 in scholarships were awarded to four students. This year organizers anticipate a sell-out event which will again raise $8,500 for scholarships.

Two of the scholarships will be awarded to students at Laguna College of Art & Design, and the two remaining scholarships will be awarded to seniors at Laguna Beach High School.

Students selected to receive the scholarships will have met criteria based on individual essay submissions, academic excellence, community service efforts, and portfolios which were reviewed by the scholarship selection committee.

The high school scholarships will be awarded to the students at a Friday Rotary luncheon in May, and the college scholarships will be awarded at the Chamber of Commerce May mixer.
