COSTA MESA — Junior Teagan LaBare, sophomore Tatiana Williams and freshman Hunter Strodel won two events each for the Mustangs in their Orange Coast League opener Thursday at Orange Coast College.

LaBare won the 100 meters in 12.8 seconds and the 200 in 26.7. She was also on the victorious 400 and 1,600 relay teams. Strodel came away with victories in the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 47 seconds and 3,200 in 13:08.

Williams contributed with first-place marks in the long jump (16-0) and triple jump (33-5).

Other Costa Mesa winners included: sophomore Rachel Daley (high jump, 5-0), junior Cheyenne Lopez (shot put, 32-2), junior Seu Ieremeia (discus, 98-0) and junior Ally Krikorian (pole vault, 7-6).

The Mustangs will compete in the Trabuco Hills Invitational Saturday.

IRVINE — Freshman Natalie Rempalski won three events to help keep the Sea Kings undefeated in the Pacific Coast League.

Rempalski took first in the high jump (5-0) and triple jump (32-1). She tied with fellow freshman teammate Kayla Marolt in the long jump with a winning mark of 15-10.

Senior Shelby Buckley won the 800 meters in 2:25.1 and the 1,600 in 5:20.5 for the Sea Kings (3-0 in league). She also contributed to the victorious 1,600 relay. Other CdM winners included: junior Claire Schmidt (200 in 27.0), freshman Sarah Craig (400 in 59.7) and sophomore Melanie Powers (3,200 in 11:38). Schmidt was on both winning relay teams.

The Sea Kings will compete in the Trabuco Hills Invitational Saturday.

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Cassidy Gayner won the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.9 seconds Thursday, as the Sailors dropped their second Sunset League meet. Junior Erica Pearson won the 1,600 with a time of 5:06. She was one of three Sailors (0-3, 0-2 in the Sunset League) to win events.

Junior pole vaulter Tonya Curfman cleared 10 feet Thursday for the first time, which, if she can repeat it at league finals, would qualify her for CIF.

Newport Harbor 66.5

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor led by two points entering the 1,600-meter relay Thursday, but lost after Edison won the event in the last two laps.

An Edison runner dropped a baton in the 4x100 relay, which the Sailors (1-2, 0-2 in the Sunset League) won.

Junior Joel Betonte won the 400 and set a personal record. Betonte, who normally competes in two relay events and two jump events, finished first with a time of 52.3 seconds, but he maxed out his event quota for the 4x400 relay.

Senior Rex Nelson took first place in his first meet of year after sitting out with Iliotibial Band Syndrome. Nelson, the defending Sunset League champion in the 1,600, ran the 800 and won in 2:05. Senior Mike Puncel won the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:28, while sophomore Cecil Whiteside hit a competitive personal record. Whiteside had 173 feet, 2 inches in the discus throw for first place, and took second in the shot put with a throw of 51-7.

IRVINE — Junior Blaine Bolus won three events for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League meet Thursday.

Bolus took first in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), long jump 20-4 1/2 ) and triple jump (42-5). He’s competing in the Trabuco Hills Invitational Saturday and the Arcadia Invitational April 12.

Seniors Ricky Townsend (100 and 200) and Thomas Dialynas (800 and 1,600) won two events each for the Sea Kings (2-1 in league).

Junior Drake Brunette took first in the 800 in 2 minutes, 12 seconds and junior Thomas Guzowski won the discus (114 feet, 8 inches) for Costa Mesa.

Bryd will compete in the Open Division 100 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational Saturday.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 7 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, improved to 11-2, 3-1 in league.

Senior Bradley Fisher and junior Ely Zaidler both swept in singles for Estancia (7-3, 2-1), ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division IV coaches’ poll.

Laguna Beach, ranked No. 3 in Division IV, improved to 3-0 in league.

NEWPORT BEACH — Newport Harbor High juniors Daron Arnold and Josh Tuz swept at No. 1 doubles in the Sunset League match Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

Seniors McKenna Duley and Taylor Friend also swept in doubles for Newport Harbor (4-5, 2-2 in league). Senior John Hutchinson won his first match in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles, but was then forced out of the lineup due to a shin injury.

“That changed the whole match,” Sailors Coach Kristen Case said.

NEWPORT BEACH — Fountain Valley had the medalist Thursday, but Newport Harbor came away with the win.

Chase Bear led the Sailors, shooting three-over-par 39, while Travis Ruffle (39), Erickson Klein (40), Jamie Wall (41), Steve Stoneman (42) helped stave off the Barons.

The Sailors (7-4, 2-1 in the Sunset League) play host to Los Alamitos Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club at 3 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 12,

Marina 10

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sailors senior Cory Ames had a game-high five goals in the Sunset League game Thursday at Marina High.

Junior Sean Thompson added four goals for Newport Harbor (4-6, 1-1 in league), and junior Spencer Baratto had three goals.

Senior Ronnie Dunmore made 11 saves, sophomore Lucas Gagnon was strong defensively and junior Cory Turner scored strong faceoff control for Newport Harbor.

The Sailors play at Los Alamitos on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Millikan Relays

LONG BEACH — The Newport Harbor High girls’ swim team qualified four of its relay teams into Saturday’s finals on Thursday at Belmont Plaza.

The Sailors’ 4x100-yard freestyle relay team, with swims by Mia Butera, Colleen McCall, Katie Jackson and Kate Klippert, qualified a team-best 11th. The 4x100 individual medley team, consisting of Stephanie Van Valkanburgh, Mia Butera, Katie Pedersen and Jessica Robinson, qualified 15th. The 6x50 freestyle relay team, with Colleen McCall, Curley Wheeler, Robinson, Kate Klippert, Katie Jackson and Nicolina McCall, qualified 16th.

Newport Harbor’s 4x50 breaststroke relay also qualified 16th, with Pederson, Van Valkanburg, Heather Thomson and Adrienne Taylor.

The finals for the Millikan Relays are Saturday at 6 p.m. at Belmont Plaza.

Edison 124,

Newport Harbor 47

NEWPORT BEACH — Sailors sophomore Kate Klippert finished second in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 free in the Sunset League dual meet Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

Klippert’s time of 25.14 seconds in the 50 free was a CIF Southern Section Division I automatic time, and her time of 55.30 in the 100 free is a consideration time. Senior Mimi Bury finished second in the 200 free (2:01.80) and third in the 500 free (5:25.54).

Newport Harbor (0-2-1, 0-2) plays host to Fountain Valley on Wednesday.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

NEWPORT BEACH — Sailors senior Colin McKibbin won the 200-yard freestyle and was second in the 500 freestyle, helping Newport Harbor win the Sunset League meet Tuesday at Newport Harbor High.

McKibbin’s times of 1 minute, 48.06 seconds in the 200 free and 4:54.29 in the 500 free are both CIF Southern Section Division I consideration times for the Sailors (3-0, 2-0 in league). Senior Clinton Jorth won the 200 individual medley in 2:03.35, and was second in the 100 free in 48.59 (each also CIF consideration times).

Junior David Linden captured the 100 butterfly in 54.19 seconds for Newport Harbor, junior Zach Osadche won the 100 back (58.63) and junior Andy Hayes won the 100 breast (1:05.22). The Sailors also won all three relays.

Newport Harbor plays host to Fountain Valley on Wednesday.
