Much is made of the success enjoyed by the Toshiba Classic golf tournament and how much it benefits Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian financially.

But if you take into account this is the second year that the Breakers tennis team, of World Team Tennis, is affiliated with the hospital, this summer promises to deliver a grand slam of excitement and funding.

While last year’s Breakers team suffered through a 3-11 losing record, team officials are bulking up this year’s squad with such notables as women’s tennis legend Lindsay Davenport, Paraguayan veteran Ramon Delgado, Czech phenom Michaela Pastikova and newcomers Angelika Bachmann and Bruno Echagaray.

“We’re excited to have drafted a great roster of talent for this season,” Breakers Coach Trevor Kronemann said in a news release.

We are, too.

We intend to pay close attention to the action this summer, which begins with a home opener on July 5 at the Newport Beach Country Club. Last year’s temporary stadium setup was a great success, and we plan to spend many a night watching the Breakers.

We urge locals and supporters of Hoag Hospital to do the same.
