SANTA BARBARA — Jon Steller and Jordan DuFault led the Anteaters with 15 kills each for a 32-30, 30-27, 30-20 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win that clinched a spot in the MPSF Tournament Saturday.

Setter Anthony Spittle had 45 assists for UCI (14-13, 10-10 in the MPSF).

BASEBALL

Orange Coast 5, Riverside 4

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Wes Kartch hit a game-tying two-run single in the eighth inning, as the Pirates rallied for the Orange Empire Conference win Saturday at OCC.

Kartch’s single scored Ryan Dunn and Ryan Sheeks, tying the game at 4-4. Drew Hillman then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Chris Fung with the go-ahead run.

Brandon Dixon improved to 8-1 by pitching 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, striking out four.

Orange Coast (25-7-1, 9-1 in conference) has now won eight straight games — its longest winning streak of the season — and 12 of 13.

Riverside fell to 22-11, 4-6.

The Pirates play at Riverside on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.

FRESNO — The Lions were swept in their Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Vanguard (15-21, 6-18 in conference) had just two hits in the first game. Third baseman Zachary Leighton went one for three with one run for the Lions in the second game.

Fresno Pacific improved to 25-9, 17-7.

IRVINE — Lions senior Jennifer Olvera gave up the game-winning home run in the first game, but came back with two hits and an RBI to lead No. 10-ranked Vanguard to a split in the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

Concordia catcher Carly Smith hit a two-run home run to end the first game in the ninth inning. Shortstop Sarah Howe went two for four with a run scord for the Lions (30-14, 5-9 in conference) in the second game.

The Eagles, who are unranked, are now 30-15, 4-10.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 6, Azusa Pacific 3

COSTA MESA — Tino Brodar, Greg Chevalier and Florian Lemke both won in singles and doubles, helping No. 15 Vanguard upset No. 2 Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Brodar won his singles match, 6-0, 6-0, and combined with Dominic Stockler for a doubles win. Chevalier teamed with Lemke for another doubles win for Vanguard (12-6, 4-2 in conference).

Tomas Frank also won a three-set match at No. 5 singles for Vanguard.

UCI (11-7, 5-1 in conference) also swept in doubles to win the doubles point.

COSTA MESA — The Lions split in singles but lost two of three doubles sets in the Golden State Athletic Conference matchup of top-five NAIA teams Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Hana Jurcovicova, Betyel Tesfa and Jelena Jovic all won in singles for No. 3 Vanguard (17-3, 5-2) against No. 5 APU. The Lions’ doubles team of Tesfa and Jovic was also victorious.

TRACK AND FIELD

Stanford Invitational

PALO ALTO — UC Irvine sophomore Alisha Misiata broke her own school record in the shot put with a mark of 50 feet, 7 1/4 inches, as she finished second Saturday.

Misiata passed her previous mark of 50-6 set two weeks ago at the Collegiate Classic. Hawaii’s Meghan Weaver won Saturday’s event at Stanford with a mark of 51-7.

ROWING

San Diego Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO — The Orange Coast College varsity boat won its heat, advancing to the finals Saturday at Mission Bay.

The Pirates completed the 2,000-meter course in 5 minutes, 56 seconds.

OCC will compete in the varsity finals today at 10:50 a.m., against UCLA, Santa Clara, Minnesota, UC Davis and Lehigh. The Pirates’ qualifying time was the fastest in the field.
