Irvine 5, Costa Mesa 4

COSTA MESA — Mustangs junior Mikey Molina was three for four with two doubles in the Mustangs’ first round game at the Beach Pit Classic on Saturday at Costa Mesa High.

Nick Pederson was two for three with an RBI for Costa Mesa (9-7), which used six pitchers.

The Mustangs outhit Irvine, 9-4, but D.J. Crumlich’s solo homer in the fifth tied the score and Irvine added another run and hung on.

Costa Mesa plays Vasquez of Acton in a consolation quarterfinal game Monday at 2 p.m., also at Costa Mesa High.

South Hills of West Covina, West Ranch of Stevenson Ranch, Greeley of Colorado, Woodbridge and Saugus also advanced to Monday’s quarterfinals.

Estancia (6-10) lost, 19-2, to Saugus.

Greeley defeated La Quinta, 5-4 and West Ranch beat Segerstrom, 12-11.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Sage Hill 17, Irvine 7

IRVINE — Sophomore Hayden Furey had seven goals and two assists for the Lightning in their nonleague game Saturday.

Junior Christina Liu scored five goals and freshman Daria Gordeva had two goals for Sage Hill (6-1-1). It was the first time Gordeva scored this season.

Sophomore Jordan Team also scored two goals and sophomore Hana Hunt added one goal for the Lightning.

“This is the best we’ve played all season,” Sage Hill Coach Chris Marshall said.

The Lightning play at St. Margaret’s Tuesday at 4 p.m.
