NAC crew makes history

SAN DIEGO — The men’s varsity eight of the Newport Aquatic Center won the San Diego Crew Classic in dominating fashion to become the first junior crew from Southern California to win the junior men’s premiere event Sunday at Mission Bay.

The NAC men’s eight of Jeff Cefalia, Johnny Sutterfield, Kyle Ridgeway, Eric Chebil, Matthew White, Alex Powell, J.P. Hogan, A.J. Brooks and coxswain Lauren Wands finished in 6 minutes, 11.9 seconds, eight seconds faster than the second-place finisher.

The NAC junior women’s varsity eight took second place at the 35th annual San Diego Crew Classic, one of the largest regattas in the world with over 3,500 competitors. The women’s varsity eight finished in 7:03.5. The eight included Jen Wukawitz, Charlotte Kroegger, Shaye Bastien, Kaitlin Kovacich, Greta Lofgren, Stephanie Stone, Hannah Patrick, Katherine Sanders and coxswain Ariel Handler.
