? Local professionals teach college students

Laguna College of Art & Design hosted a biannual panel discussion for Fine Arts Professional Studies students that included several key arts professionals in the community.

The Professional Studies class is designed to teach students the fundamentals of work in the professional arena and to educate them on the tools and best practices needed to enter the art world.

Alumnus, artist, teacher and former gallery owner Bradford Salamon coached students on business practices such as the importance of relationship building, creating a successful portfolio and promoting oneself with integrity.

Alumna and owner of Whelan Galleries Amber Henry shared her experience with running a commercial gallery and stressed the importance of incorporating philanthropic community involvement into one’s business plan, as well as developing acute skills in areas such as accounting and record keeping.

Verna Glancy, art dealer and owner of Verna Glancy Fine Art, emphasized the importance of communication with clients, privacy issues, and the technicalities of artist co-ops and gallery contracts.

Other areas of focus included networking, exhibition tips, and marketing one’s work regionally, nationally and internationally.

The lively discussion was moderated by instructor Robin Fuld, who also serves as Career and Placement Officer at the college.
