THE HARBOR COLUMN:

Ahoy,

The temporary docks in the harbor are full of boats for the West’s premiere in-water big-yacht show that is happening now.

The 35th annual Newport Boat Show features big boats with more than 300 boats on display and no limit on the size of bigger vessels.

This show is especially for serious buyers, and it’s a great show to walk the docks to view the spectacular yachts. Duncan McIntosh, show organizer, has finished the logistical challenge to get all the boats into the lagoons and docks before the show started this week.

On Saturday, I invite you to join me for our live radio broadcast at the Newport Boat Show in Lido Marina Village.

You do not need a ticket to join the radio show from 11 a.m. to noon where our broadcast tent will be set up on the village’s brick roadway directly across from Electra Cruises’ office.

My show manager, Capt. Chandler Bell, will help me on the air to interview the guests, plus, you can have your picture taken with the Boathouse Girls.

A local singer named Samantha Smith, aka Sam, will provide our entertainment during commercial breaks.

I highly recommend that you use the free parking and free shuttle bus. There are two locations for free parking at the Newport Harbor Lutheran Church, 798 Dover Drive, and at the Newport Health Center on Superior Avenue. You can surf to www.newportinwaterboatshow.com to find out hours and ticket prices to go on the docks.

Tip of the week is congratulations to Chris Miller who has been promoted to Harbor Resources Manager from Harbor Resources Supervisor.

Bon voyage to now-retired Tom Rossmiller who held the manager’s position from the department’s inception about five years ago. As Chris steps up into his new position, Tom will be on hand on a part-time basis to help with a few projects, which is good news as Tom has a wealth of institutional knowledge that he can continue to pass on to Chris.

Remember to tune in at 11 a.m. Saturday to “Capt. Mike Whitehead’s Boathouse Radio Show” on KLAA-AM (830). Special thanks this weekend to our three engineers who will make the live remote happen. Howard and Jennifer will be at the radio station, and our in-field engineer is Craig who will operate the equipment at the boat show.
