Arcadia Invitational

ARCADIA — Newport Harbor High sophomore Cecil Whiteside finished second in the “Rising Stars” open boys’ shot put at Arcadia High.

Whiteside had a mark of 52 feet even, accomplished in his first throw. Junior teammate Brandon Kula placed 10th, with a mark of 47 feet, 6 inches.

The Corona del Mar High team of senior Allison Damon, junior Kim Condino, senior Shelby Buckley and junior Tina Theriot placed sixth in the girls’ invitational 4x800 meters Friday, in 9 minutes, 44.83 seconds.

Sage Hill def. Brethren Christian

NEWPORT COAST — Sophomore Joey Booth had team-highs of 16 kills and 17 digs as the Lightning swept the Academy League match, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23, Friday at Sage Hill.

Junior outside hitter Bayle Smith had 11 kills and six service aces for the Lightning (8-9, 3-0 in league). Sage Hill is at the Viewpoint tournament in Calabasas today.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 11, Mission Viejo 5

NEWPORT BEACH — Sailors junior Zach Gagnon had a team-high three goals in the nonleague game Friday at Newport Harbor High. Cory Ames, Sean Thompson and Daniel Apple added two goals each for Newport Harbor (5-7). Newport Harbor plays host to Tesoro on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Sage Hill 10, St. Margaret’s 0

Junior pitcher Morgan Hembarsky pitched a shutout against St. Margaret’s and senior Katie McKeon was three for four Friday. The Lightning (4-9, 2-0 in the Academy League) play at Capistrano Valley Christian Monday at 3:15.
