COSTA MESA — Former Corona del Mar High standout Kevin Welch broke the Pirates’ single-season kill record Wednesday as OCC won, 30-18, 30-16, 30-18.

Welch turned in a 20-kill performance in the Pirates’ last Pacific Coast Conference match of the season. Welch’s 390 kills beats the previous record of 389, set in 1995 by Jason Crone.

The Pirates (13-6, 9-3 in conference) finished second to conference champion Irvine Valley. OCC will play a home match in the first round of Southern California regional playoffs, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The opponent is to be determined. Playoff seedings will be announced Saturday.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7, UC Riverside 0

IRVINE — The Anteaters completed their regular season in the Big West Conference sweep Thursday.

UCI (18-8, 7-1 in conference) will open the Big West Championships as the No. 2 seed on Friday at 9 a.m. against No. 7-seeded Pacific at Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Long Beach State won the regular-season title.

Freshman Brooke Bartlett won 12 of 15 games in her No. 3 singles victory for UCI.

LOS ANGELES — Freshman Khunpol Issara won at No. 4 singles for the Anteaters (10-13) in the nonconference match against the No. 5-ranked Bruins at Los Angeles Tennis Center Wednesday.

UC Riverside 4, Vanguard 3

RIVERSIDE — Florian Lemke, Dominic Stockler, and Tino Brodar won singles matches for the Lions (13-7) in the nonconference match Wednesday.

COSTA MESA — Lions junior shortstop Kyle Bondurant was two for four with a run scored in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

The Lions dropped to 15-26, 6-23 in conference.
