Lopes is bike hall of fame nominee

Laguna Beach resident Brian Lopes has been nominated for entrance into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame.

Lopes has 25 world championship wins under his belt (the most among male competitors), is a four-time world title-holder and a nine-time national champion.

Nominees are divided into six categories; advocacy, industry, journalism, pioneers, promotion and racing history. Lopes has been nominated in the category of racing history.

If inducted, he will join the ranks of Hans Rey, Alison Syder, Tinker Juarez and Thomas Frischnecht.

The voting is done by past inductees and current Mountain Bike Hall of Fame members.

The Mountain Bike Hall of Fame was started in 1988 with the mission to preserve the history of the sport.

The hall of fame museum is located in Crested Butte, Colo. Each year, between three and seven individuals or groups are inducted into the hall of fame.

Lopes, 36, made his professional mountain biking debut in 1993.

Davenport returns to Breakers’ tennis team

Lindsay Davenport, a three-time Grand Slam singles champion and Laguna Beach resident, returns to the Newport Beach Breakers lineup and will compete in a July 10 match when the Breakers host the Springfield Lasers in World TeamTennis action.

The Breakers will play a total of 14 matches during a three-week World TeamTennis season that runs July 3-23. Seven of those matches will be played on the their home court.

Davenport, who is in her second stint with the Breakers since 2003, won the 1996 Olympic gold medal in singles and captured Grand Slam singles titles were at the 1998 U.S. Open, 1999 Wimbledon and 2000 Australian Open.

With more prize money than any other professional female athlete, she finished as the top-ranked female player in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
