The Laguna Beach boys’ volleyball team picked up another pair of wins in back-to-back Orange Coast League action, played April 4 and Tuesday, this time against Costa Mesa.

The Breakers dominated both matches, winning the first three consecutive games each time.

They first defeated the host Mustangs on April 4, winning 25-10, 28-26, 25-19.

They returned on Tuesday to again defeat the Mustangs on Mesa’s home court, this time without two starting players — outside hitter Cooper Gwaltney and setter Clay Knapp, who were out sick — with scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.

“I was happy, for the most part, with the way we played in the second match considering we were short-handed,” Laguna assistant coach Zach Miller said.

Miller said while he was confident his team would win the match, he was still disappointed in some missed opportunities on the court.

“We had some instances where we weren’t setting up efficiently and as a result, [Mesa] scored multiple points in a row,” he said.

In the first match, Shawn Merz and Gwaltney each had 11 kills. Harrison Phelps and Mike Kahl had 8 and 7 digs, respectively, and Travis Woloson and Knapp had 17 and 15 set assists.

Chapel and Merz had 15 and 13 kills, respectively, in the second match. Chris Reams had four digs, and Lorenzo Torriero had one ace.

In previous league action, the Breakers defeated Calvary Chapel in back-to-back matches on April 1 and April 2.

They picked up the first win on the Eagles home court, winning 20-25, 27-25, 25-9, 25-15, and came back the following day to defeat the Eagles on Calvary’s home court, by scores of 24-26, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19.

In the two matches, Merz and Torriero had 43 and 32 kills, respectively. Merz also had 31 digs, followed by Phelps with 30 and Cooper Gwaltney with 25. Clay Knapp recorded 87 assists.

The Breakers are now 13-6 overall, 5-0 in league play.

Laguna plays Estancia at 5 p.m. today in league play in Costa Mesa.
