Steinberg readies for 2nd annual concussion clinic

After Leigh Steinberg watched his quarterback Troy Aikman deal with a concussion during the playoffs in 1994, the then-sports agent knew he had to do something about it.

Ever since, Steinberg, a Newport Beach resident, has been drumming up safety awareness about concussions. His quest started slow, but it is now peaking he said because he’s getting the NFL in the act. Steinberg is helping conduct the Sports Concussion Institute’s National Concussion Summit today at the Marriott Hotel in Marina del Rey.

The clinic is in its second year and will have an NFL presence for the first time, with Hall of Famers Warren Moon and Rod Woodson scheduled to speak.

“I felt like the Berlin Wall was falling when the league had taken notice,” Steinberg said. “[Last year] we were still in that old state, where concussions weren’t seen as a problem. With a new commissioner and a fresh look it’s exciting to see a different approach.”

On Saturday, Ken Norton Jr. will conduct a clinic for coaches that deals with proper field techniques to prevent concussions. That clinic is free to CIF football coaches. For more information, visit, www.concussiontreatment.com.
