Police conduct DUI checkpoint for awareness

The Costa Mesa Police Department will conduct a sobriety and drivers license checkpoint this week.

The checkpoint set up to stop northbound cars on Harbor Boulevard at Gisler Avenue will be from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. Friday.

The checkpoint is to educate the public about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or without a drivers license, officials said.

More than 1,000 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence last year in Costa Mesa. Funding for the program is provided by California’s Office of Traffic Safety and is generally considered an awareness tool for officers, police said. The department works closely with Mothers Against Drunk Driving, police said.

The organization will have its crashed car trailer on site to remind people of the consequences of drinking and driving.
