The Fountain Valley School District Board of Trustees voted to liquidate an assistant superintendent position to free up budget space for music and science programs Thursday.

District Supt. Marc Ecker said the district was forced to trim $1.6 million from its 11 elementary and middle schools because of California’s across-the-board budget cuts.

The district will not replace Assistant Supt. Carl Dane’s position when he retires, instead dividing his responsibilities among other staff. This will eliminate $155,000 from the budget.

Ocean View examines board member’s memo

The Ocean View School District has formed a special committee to privately meet about possible legal issues related to a board member.

On Friday, the board voted 4-1 to form a litigation committee, which contains every member but trustee John Briscoe. Those four then met in closed session to discuss legal issues touching on Briscoe, including the potential of a lawsuit by the district’s web provider, district documents state.

Briscoe released a warning about browser cookies on the district’s website.

The actions are preliminary and no one has taken legal action at this time, board President Debbie Cotton said.

Briscoe called the meeting improper under board rules and part of a “vendetta.”
