Football registration is Saturday

Huntington Beach Pop Warner Football will stage its next sign-up session for its 2008 fall season Saturday. Registration for both players and cheerleaders will be taken between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Edison High.

League divisions are as follows (age as of July 31, 2008): Cub (flag football), ages 5-6; Jr. Mighty Mite (ages 7-8); Mighty Mite (ages 8-9); Jr. Pee Wee (ages 8-11); Pee Wee (ages 9-12); Jr. Midget (ages 10-13); Midget (ages 11-15).

All players and cheerleaders, with the exception of those in the Cub Division, must carry a minimum 2.0 GPA in order to participate in the league.

A final registration date for sign ups will take place May 18 (noon to 4 p.m.) also at Edison High.

In other Pop Warner Football news, the Huntington Beach chapter is seeking candidates for volunteer head coach and assistant coach positions.

Candidates will be required to interview with a selection panel, complete a volunteer application and undergo a background check. The league is seeking candidates with previous playing or coaching experience at the high school, college or professional level.

Saturday tryout for soccer club teams

North Huntington Beach Soccer will hold a tryout session Saturday at Hope View School in Huntington Beach.

The tryouts will be from noon to 2:30 p.m. for the girls’ Under-16 (Bronze) and girls’ Under-17 (Silver) teams.

Hoops tournament at Edison High Saturday

A competitive adult and high school-aged 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be Saturday at the Edison High gym.

The tournament is a double-elimination event and teams are selected based on a player’s skill level.

Check-in is a 8 a.m.

Tournament proceeds benefit the new Edison weight room. A minimum $25 donation per player is required.
