Orange Empire Finals

MISSION VIEJO — Three individual event winners helped the Orange Coast College widen its lead to 158 points in the team standings after the second day of the three-day event Friday at Saddleback College.

Greg Hulse won the 100-year butterfly (50.45 seconds), Elden Carpenter won the 400 individual medley (4:14.55) and Jonathan Franzen won the one-meter diving event for the Pirates.

Carpenter and Fulse also teamed with Joe Krone and Chase Olswang to win the 200 medley relay in 1 minute, 36.62 seconds.

Aaron Hoff (400 IM), Eric Smith (100 butterfly), Chase Seacrest (100 breaststroke) and Chris Malloy (one-meter diving) all had runner-up finishes for the Pirates.

Adding third-place finishes for OCC were Nick Tossey (400 IM) and Chase Olswang (100 breastroke).

OCC has 589 points and Golden West is second.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING & DIVING

Orange Empire Finals

MISSION VIEJO — Nikki Burrell won the three-meter diving and Ashlee Gray topped the field in the 50-yard breaststroke to help Orange Coast College move closer to the team title Friday, the second day of the three-day event at Saddleback College.

Burrell, who won the one-meter event Thursday, posted 228.8 points Friday, more than 100 points better than the runner-up.

Gray’s time of 32.52 seconds bested teammate Lacy Larson (34.02), who was second.

OCC has 494.5 points, while Riverside is second with 414.

Jamie Krispel (200 individual medley) was a second-place finisher, while Nikki Burns was fourth in same event to add valuable points for OCC.

The event concludes today, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 5, Pacific 0

INDIAN WELLS — Senior Becky Bernhard led a singles sweep for the Anteaters in the quarterfinals of the Big West Tournament Friday.

UCI (15-8) advances to the conference semifinals for the seventh straight season and for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons. The Anteaters will face Cal State Northridge (14-7), a 4-2 winner over UC Davis in a Friday quarterfinal.

Bernhard won 12 of 18 games against her foe at No. 1 singles, as did Heidi Kaloi at No. 6 singles.

UCI’s Brooke Bartlett won 12 of 17 games at No. 4 singles.
