Janes, Turpin highlight top locals in Ensenada

David Janes and Bill Turpin of the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club in Corona del Mar guided Akela to first overall on corrected time to win the President of Mexico trophy in the Newport Sailing Assn.’s 61st Newport to Ensenada race, for which results were made final on Sunday.

Akela, competing in the Maxi class, highlighted a handful of local winners in their respective classes in the 125-nautical-mile race that began Friday off of Newport Beach.

Byron Chamberlain, representing the Newport Harbor Yacht Club, skippered Rose of Sharon to first place in the Ancient Mariner class (corrected handicap time).

In the PHRF I class, Pussycat, a Peterson 34 skippered by John Szalay of the UC Irvine Sailing Assn., was victorious according to corrected handicap time. It was Szalay’s 44th Newport to Ensenada race.

Skipper James Devlin of the Balboa Yacht Club piloted Campaign II to the PHRF J title, while Randy Reynolds of the Lido Isle Yacht Club, guided Car Attack to the top finish in XS Racing.

There were 391 entries, 380 starters and 307 finishers in the event.
