Boat runs aground

A Catalina 27 boat ran aground Wednesday morning near the jetty at Corona del Mar after its anchor broke loose, lifeguards said.

The 25-foot boat arrived on shore just before low tide and stayed there till late in the afternoon.

An early attempt to tug the boat out of the sand proved pointless — the wet sand only buried the boat deeper.

Lifeguards and Harbor Patrol boats had to wait until later in the afternoon near high tide to pull the boat out.

Harbor Patrol boats towed the boat into harbor.

No one was aboard the boat when it ran aground and no one on shore was injured, said Newport Beach Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Schulz.
