Costa Mesa boys and girls try to defend league titles

Both the Costa Mesa High boys’ and girls’ swim teams will be looking to defend their Orange Coast League titles in the league finals, today at Laguna Beach High at 2 p.m.

Estancia and Calvary Chapel will also be at the meet, but Costa Mesa Coach Patty Smith said the league titles should come down to either the Mustangs or Breakers. Costa Mesa’s boys’ team didn’t lose a league dual meet, but the girls fell to Laguna Beach on April 22. The winner at league finals on both sides will win league, Smith said.

“We were quite surprised with [Laguna Beach’s] depth this year,” Smith said. “Both on the girls’ side and the boys’ side, it’s going to be a very tight race between us and Laguna Beach ... We’re set to taper really well for [today].”
