LITTLE LEAGUE

The Dodgers may have been the top dog in the Majors Division race at Huntington Valley Little League, but the Diamondbacks had their number Saturday.

The D-backs received a shutout performance from Sean O’Toole as they blanked the Dodgers 6-0.

O’Toole threw 77 pitches overall and recorded 15 strikeouts.

On the other side, Dodgers hurler Tyler Murray registered 10 strikeouts but surrendered hits to O’Toole, Tommy Blood, Tucker DeCamp and Jesse Fortune.

Dodgers 17, Yankees 8

It was a twist of pitcher vs. hitter as the Dodgers stormed back to defeat the Yankees.

Blake Hollingsworth hit a grand slam off Dodgers pitcher Tyler Murray to give the Yankees a 5-0 lead but Murray returned the favor when he delivered a grand slam of his own off of Hollingsworth.

The Dodgers also got home runs from Jake Weiser, who was three for three with a double and six RBI and a solo shot from Andrew Geiger.

Red Sox 9, Yankees 8

Garrett Garcia homered and Ian Wilson doubled in two runs as the Red Sox defeated the Yankees.

Red Sox 9, Diamondbacks 5

The Red Sox turned third-inning hits by David Baskin, Noah Davis, Nick Krakower, Andrew Johnson, Garrett Garcia, Blake Diamond and Jarrett Anton into several runs as they turned back the Diamondbacks.

Jack Tenney, Dan Coddington, Noah Taylor and Sean O’Toole had hits for the Diamondbacks.

Angels 9, Red Sox 6

Home runs ruled the day as Dillon Millar, Ryan Morrissey and Pierson Loska hit homers for the Angels and Garrett Garcia clubbed one for the Red Sox.

Diamondbacks 12, Yankees 4

Hits by Sean O’Toole, Noah Nelson and Noah Taylor preceded a three-run home run by Tommy Blood that gave the Diamondbacks the early lead en route to a win over the Yankees.

The Yankees, however, came back to take the lead on Kyle Crossen’s two-run home run and a two-RBI hit by Frank Hoshijima that scored Sean Mastro and Blake Hollingworth who both singled. The Diamondbacks began to pull away in the fifth behind hits from Blood, Nelson, Jesse Fortune and Tucker DeCamp.

Junior League

Braves 4, Seaview 3

Max Davitt drove in the winning run in the fifth inning to get Huntington Valley past Seaview.

Davitt’s fly ball to right-field scored Michael glass who had opened the fifth with a double.

Lance Siegel had a single and triple to account for two RBI.

Nick Gates picked up his third save of the season by getting the final two Seaview batters to ground out.

Angels 3, Braves 2

An RBI double in the fourth inning by Dylan Eskridge allowed the Angels to slip past the Braves.

Both Eskridge and the Braves’ Hayden Polhamus threw a complete game.

Purpleicious, a 12-and-Under team out of South Huntington Beach Girls Fastpitch Softball, claimed second place Sunday at the eighth annual Garden Grove Rec Ball Tournament.

The team played four games in a single day and did so in 98-degree heat.

Playing without key player Briahna Martinez, Purpleicious overcame an opening 8-0 loss in pool play to Placentia-Yorba Linda to blank host Garden Grove by the same 8-0 score. Kim Estes had two hits and Phoebe Puerner, Danielle Brodeur and Lauren Ratzlaff also had hits to lead the offense.

In the semifinals, Purpleicious faced a rematch with Placentia-Yorba Linda and this time, made the most of the second chance.

They jumped out to a 4-0 first-inning lead behind consecutive hits by Sinead Martin, Ratzlaff, Emily Stoner, Dana Kerins and Estes. They added another run in the second inning when Jennifer Larson’s sacrifice bunt scored Allie Brodt.

Placentia-Yorba Linda scored two runs in the bottom of the third, but couldn’t catch Purpleicious, who advanced to the division final with a 5-2 victory. In the final, Purpleicious took on West Garden Grove and bolted to a 5-0 lead behind strong hitting, smart base-running and a strong pitching effort by Stoner. West Garden Grove, however, battled back and won the title with a 9-7 win.

The pitching-catching combo of Stoner and Martin combined for all 22 innings on the day. Purpleicious is Jennifer Larson, Danielle Brodeur, Allie Brodt, Lauren Ratzlaff, Tyler Ratzlaff, Dana Kerins, Sinead Martin, Kim Estes, Katie Estes, Phoebe Puerner, Briahna Martinez and Emily Stoner. Coaches are Dan Kerins, Bob Stoner, Rob Ratzlaff, Eric Estes and Mike Ratzlaff.
