YOUTH SCENE: Local soccer team gets split decision
DINOSAUR CHICAS
The Laguna Beach Dinosaur Chicas soccer team picked up one loss and one win over the weekend.
Laguna Niguel handed them their first loss of the season in a close 1-0 battle at Moulton Meadows Field on Saturday.
The Chica’s tough defense by Natalie Belyea, Nadia Demilly-Otteson and Hailey Ferguson held visiting Niguel to a scoreless 0-0 tie until the fourth quarter.
Midfielders Victoria Bush and Jamie Duncan fought to control the center of the field and pass to the forwards, but a break-away late in the match led to Niguel’s one goal past the Chicas’ defenders, handing them a tough loss.
The Chicas came back on Sunday with raised energy and beat an undefeated San Clemente 2-0 at El Moro Field.
“It was an amazing match,” Laguna assistant coach Tim Merchant said. “The girls really played as a team today with everybody doing their job on the field.”
The first three quarters of the match were a back-and-forth battle between opposing defenses. Defenders continuously regained possession of the ball with several tackles, while first half goal keeper Nina Bo defended the net with several amazing saves.
The Chicas offense dominated their opposing forces, including a few intercepted passes.
In the third quarter, Bo switched to center forward, where she scored the team’s first goal. Offensive pressure in the fourth quarter caused San Clemente to score on their own goal, putting Laguna over the top, 2-0.
