State championships
MISSION VIEJO — Nikki Burrelli won the one-meter women’s diving competition and Jonathan Franzen won the men’s three-meter title to highlight Orange Coast College competitors on the first day of finals Thursday at Saddleback College.
Burrelli’s 240.110 points helped here edge Dominique Campora of Sierra College, who had 238.80.
Franzen scored 253.05 points, nearly 10 more than his closest competitor.
OCC’s Greg Hulse was third in the men’s 50-yard freestyle in 21.09 seconds for OCC, which also included Jamie Krispel, who was fifth in the women’s 100 individual medley (1 minute, 3.76 seconds), Kirk Pfotenhauer, who was seventh in the 500 free (4:41.17), and Elden Carpenter, who was seventh in the men’s 200 IM (1:58.19).
The Pirates’ Ashlee Gray was 15th in the women’s 100 IM (1:05.56). Hulse and Carpenter both helped OCC finish third in the men’s 400 free relay (3:29.72) and fifth in the men’s 200 free relay (1:26.20).
The OCC men’s team is third with 135 points, behind Ventura (148) and Diablo Valley (146).
The OCC women are in seventh place with 72 points. Santa Rosa leads with 151.5.

NCAA Championship
UC Irvine senior Victor Lamm will compete in the 2008 NCAA men’s singles tournament after earning an automatic bid.
Lamm was ranked No. 123 in the country the most recent ITA rankings. Players in the top 125 automatically qualify.
Lamm was the only Big West Conference player ranked in the top 125.
Lamm will begin play May 21 at the University of Tulsa.
Lamm is the first Anteater to be selected for the NCAA Championships since Trevor Kronemann, who is now the UCI coach, and Richard Lubner.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Vanguard 5, Azusa Pacific 1
FRESNO — Sophomore Betyel Tesfa and senior Jelena Jovic won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively, and teamed with one another to win at No. 2 doubles to propel the Lions in the semifinals of the NAIA Region II Tournament Thursday at Fresno Pacific University.
Vanguard, which lost, 5-4, to APU in their previous meeting, advances to today’s title match against Fresno Pacific.
Vanguard, ranked No. 5, is 21-3. No. 2-ranked Fresno Pacific won the Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season title with a 9-0 record, including a 6-3 win over Vanguard in February.
Both finalists will advance to the NAIA national tournament later this month in Alabama.

Regionals
SANTA BARBARA — Orange Coast College freshmen Brittany Bass and Brittnie Furuvald both advanced to the Round of 16 on Thursday with straight-set singles wins.
No. 4-seeded Bass defeated Melissa Valdez of Mt. San Jacinto, 6-2, 6-2, while No. 8-seeded Furuvald got by Brina Joffe of Antelope Valley, 6-0, 6-1.
Bass and Furuvald also advanced in doubles, where the No. 2-seeded team topped a team from Mt. San Antonio College, 6-1, 6-1. Costa Mesa High product Evelyn Wallace and Kalin Eshelman also advanced, defeating Paulina Partida and Katsura Kinoshita of College of the Desert, 6-3, 6-0.
Wallace lost in singles to Carolyn Petero of Long Beach, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. The Pirates’ Emily Garcia and Jasmine Mathieson, a Costa Mesa High product, lost, 6-0, ret., to top-seeded Vanesa Reibstein and Brianna McClintock of Grossmont in doubles.
MEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Grubbs, Pepperdine
advance
IRVINE — Newport Harbor High product Sean Grubbs and Pepperdine University swept Long Beach State, 30-26, 30-21, 30-26, in the semifinals of the NCAA volleyball championships Thursday at UC Irvine.
Grubbs, a sophomore libero, had two assists and four digs for the No. 2-seeded Waves (17-10). Newport Harbor High product Adam Schlesinger had six kills for No. 3-seeded Long Beach State, which finishes 23-7.
Pepperdine will face top-seeded Penn State on Saturday at 4 p.m. at UC Irvine. Penn State has Corona del Mar High product Brad McCoy on its roster.
