IRVINE — Corona del Mar High senior Fabian Mathews defeated University’s Jason Lin, 6-1, 6-0 to win the championship Thursday at Beckman.

Matthews, the top seed, finished undefeated in the PCL. He’s also 30-0 in singles during team match play.

Matthews, bound for UC Irvine, beat Kona Luu of University, 6-1, 6-3, in the semifinals.

He advances to the CIF Southern Section individual tournament May 16 at a site to be determined.

CdM junior Chris Damion lost to Lin, 1-6, 3-6, in the semifinals, and Luu, 6-8, in the third-place match.

The CdM doubles team of Gabino Felgueroso and Bryan Buchert, and the Sea Kings tandem of Shane Korber and Ryan Peyton each lost in the semis.

Korber and Peyton defeated Felgueroso and Buchert, 8-2, in the third-place match.

SEAL BEACH — Newport Harbor High juniors Josh Tuz and Daron Arnold, the No. 2 seed, defeated top-seeded Deondre Moss and Dominick Shubert of Los Alamitos, 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, to win the doubles crown Thursday at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Tuz and Arnold are now 10-0 as a tandem. Tuz played singles during the regular season, while Moss was typically paired with Cameron Chase.

Newport Harbor senior John Hutchinson, the No. 3 seed, fell to top-seeded Derek Siddiqui of Los Alamitos, 6-0, 6-1, in the singles final.

Hutchinson, who along with the doubles tandem will advance to the CIF Southern Section individual tournament May 16, defeated Parker Gloe from Marina, 6-4, 6-3, in Thursday’s semifinal.

NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill School junior Kevin Wang won the league singles title by defeating junior teammate Troy Astorino, 6-0, 6-3, Friday at the Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Top-seeded Wang and second-seeded Astorino both qualify for the CIF Southern Section Individual tournament, scheduled for May 16. So did the Sage doubles team of Andrew Yun and Andrew Kurzweil, who lost in the finals to Christian Gaarenstroom and Krishna Kaliannan of St. Margaret’s, 7-6, 6-3.

Sage Hill’s Grant Gerdau and Alex Koeberle, the No. 2 seed in doubles, was upset in the semifinals by the St. Margaret’s team, 6-3, 7-6, while Yun and Kurzweil defeated a team from Whitney.

In the singles semifinals, Wang defeated No. 4-seeded Joseph Park of Whitney, 6-2, 7-5, while Astorino got by No. 3-seeded Joel Kennedy of Whitney, 6-1, 3-6, 6-4.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

The Corona del Mar High girls’ lacrosse team pulled itself out of the Orange County Championship tournament due to the timing of the event, said first-year varsity coach Ben Lin.

Lin said the Sea Kings had received the No. 7 seed in the eight-team tournament, which begins today with quarterfinal action. CdM finished 10-7, 5-2 in the Pacific Coast League, good enough for second place.

“We just found out about the dates too late and I had already made a prior commitment,” said Lin, adding that his assistant was going to be out of town as well. “I was originally going to do the color commentary for the boys’ OC championship game, but then that got canceled, because Trabuco Hills High School won’t allow Cox News Station to be there, because of construction.”

CHINO HILLS — Newport Harbor High sophomore Travis Russell finished tied for fifth to qualify for the CIF Southern Section individuals after shooting five-over-par 151 Thursday at Los Serranos Golf Course.

Russell shot one-over 73 on Wednesday, four-over 78 Thursday.

Marina’s Jeff Fuzzard won the Sunset League title, finishing at two-under 144 (74-70).

Newport Harbor’s Chase Behr missed the six-man cut, finishing seventh with 153 (75-78).

Russell will compete in the CIF Southern Regional at SeaCliff Country Club May 12.

The Sailors, the Sunset League champions, play in the CIF Southern Section Central Team Divisional at Lakewood Golf Course Tuesday.

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill School’s Justin Stroud won three events and contributed to the victorious 1,600-meter relay, helping lead the Lightning to the league title Thursday at Saddleback College.

Stroud won the 110 high hurdles (16.59 seconds) and the 300 intermediate hurdles (42.96), as well as the long jump (20 feet, 11 1/2 inches. He was on the 4x400 team that included Lion Wintemute, Connor Rose and Sean McElroy.

Rose won two events, the 800 in 2:03.53 and the 1,600 in 4:45.66, as did Cody Gates, winning the shot put (42-7 1/2 ) and the discus (131-3 1/2 ).

Sage Hill’s Andy Multari broke the league and school record in the high jump when he cleared 6-4 to win the event. He surpassed the former record, 6-2, held by Blaine Bolus (2003), who transferred to Corona del Mar.

Kevin Schaefer was an individual champion for Sage Hill, winning the 100 in 10.75. He also broke the school record in the pole vault with his winning mark of 9-6. The Lightning also had Wintemute (400 in 50.47) and McElroy (3,200 in 10:44) as champions.

The individual champions qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries at Carpinteria High May 10.

Wintemute and Schaefer also qualified in the 200, finishing second and third, respectively. McElroy qualified for CIF in the 1,600, as he finished second. Multari qualified for CIF with his third-place finish in the pole vault (8-6).

MISSION VIEJO — Sage Hill School junior Cait Williamson won three events Thursday at Saddleback College, where the Lightning took third.

Williamson was first in the 800 meters (2:28.50), 1,600 in 5:22.62 and 3,200 in 12:30.69.

Lightning freshman Megan Kim won the 100 in 12.9 seconds and the 200 in 27.25. She was also third in the long jump (14-9 1/4 ).

Jackie Dion won the 400 in 1:03.75. She finished second in the high jump (4-10) and the pole vault (7-6).

The three girls qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division IV preliminaries at Carpinteria High May 10.

CORONA DEL MAR — Beau Attyah went two for three with a double for the Sea Kings in their nonleague game Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors wrapped up an undefeated Sunset League season with the 25-13, 25-18, 25-20 sweep Thursday at Newport Harbor High.

Senior Kyle Caldwell had 10 kills, 36 assists, two blocks and two aces for the league champion Sailors (26-3, 10-0 in league), the top-ranked team in CIF Southern Section Division I. Senior Mark Liebermann added eight kills and two service aces, while seniors Max Volz and Tucker Peleuses added seven kills each.

Jamie Galey had four kills and JB Green three for Newport Harbor, which has won 16 straight matches. The Tars play Back Bay rival Corona del Mar tonight at 8 at UC Irvine’s Bren Events Center.
