SANTA BARBARA — The Orange Coast College doubles team of freshmen Brittany Bass and Brittnie Furuvald lost in the finals Saturday at Santa Barbara City College.

Bass and Furuvald, the No. 2-seeded team, fell to top-seeded Brianna McClintock and Vanesa Reibstein of Grossmont, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. In the semifinals, the OCC team had defeated Caroline Houston and Jeanie Vatelia of Riverside, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-4.

Bass and Furuvald did qualify for the state championships as a doubles team as well as in singles. Bass lost in singles to top-seeded Lorena Zago of College of the Desert in the semifinals Saturday, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).

Orange Coast plays host to Grossmont on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Southern California team regional final. The winner will advance to the team state championship on Thursday.

IRVINE — UC Irvine turned in several strong performances Saturday in the first day of the event at Anteater Stadium.

UCI senior Eric Nyberg finished third in the javelin throw with a career-best mark of 189 feet, 8 inches, while sophomore Matt Lahti was seventh in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 182-3 to improve on his No. 5 throw in school history.

Junior Nick Mosey finished sixth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 48.73 seconds.

UCI junior Kendall Bruton placed fifth in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 11:19.56 and junior Gabriela Santana was fifth in the 5,000 meters in 17:19.08. Teammates Erinn Kim (17:37.07) and Emily Romo (17:39.58) were sixth and seventh, respectively.

Junior Jenny Lee finished seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 128-11, which was ninth-best in school history.

The meet continues today.
