HIGH SCHOOLS:

The Corona del Mar High boys’ swim team is making up for lost time.

After winning their first league title since 1995 last year, the Sea Kings had so much fun they decided to do it again Friday at the Pacific Coast League finals.

Corona del Mar edged Irvine High by a single point, 462-461. The meet was close throughout, but the Sea Kings’ John Kim, Michael Liao and Garrett Larson had three of the top five times in the 100-yard breaststroke to allow the team to move ahead.

The Sea Kings were also helped by the disqualification of Irvine and University in the boys’ 50 freestyle. Neither teams earned points in the event because their swimmers swam in the same lane.

Also included in CdM’s victory was a team record, set by senior Yutaro Yamashita in the 500 free.

Yamashita was second in the race to Beckman’s Charlie Rimkus, but his time of 4 minutes, 36.62 seconds bettered the old CdM mark of 4:36.69, set in 1986 by Eric Ford. The Arizona State-bound Yamashita also owns the school record in the 100 butterfly (51.02 seconds).

It’s yet to be determined if there’s something in the water, but Newport-Mesa boys’ swimmers won each of the four leagues — also including Academy, Orange Coast and Sunset — that they competed in this year.

Sage Hill’s boys won the Academy League Friday, the same day that Newport Harbor won the Sunset League.

The Costa Mesa High boys won the Orange Coast League title on Thursday.

?Garrett’s older sister, Kelsey Larson, didn’t have such a bad day herself at the Pacific Coast League finals, where the CdM girls placed third.

The CdM junior was co-swimmer of the meet on the girls’ side, along with Felicia Leksono of Irvine.

Larson typically swims the breaststroke and individual medley, but Friday she was in the 200 free and the 500 free.

“Instead of having [junior] Sarah [Furgatch] and me doing the same events, we wanted to do different events to get more points,” Larson said. “That was part of our strategy.”

Larson won both the 200 free (1:56.45) and 500 free (5:09.37) in personal-best times. At the CIF Southern Section Division I preliminaries on Wednesday, she’ll likely swim the breaststroke and IM.

“My goal is to make it in the top eight in both those events,” she said.

Furgatch won the IM (2:08.39) and was a close second in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.08) at league finals. In the latter event, she earned an All-American time but was out-touched by her friend, Lauren Parrett, of University.

Larson, Furgatch and Parrett, along with many of the league champion Uni girls, swim for the Irvine AquaZots club program.

“I basically know all the club swimmers at Uni,” Furgatch said. “It’s kind of interesting going to league meets.”

Furgatch has qualified for CIF in four different individual events — the 200 and 500 free, breaststroke and IM — as well as the 400 free relay with Larson, Allison Peotter and Heather Van Hiel.

“I think it’s the most solid high school season I’ve had so far,” she said.

At CIF, Furgatch finished fifth in the breaststroke last year.

But this year, she said she’ll probably swim the individual medley and 200 free. She’ll be seeded third in the IM at the preliminaries at Belmont Plaza on Wednesday.
