Mariachis and margaritas

The locals gathered at El Ranchito in Corona del Mar on Monday night, sipping margaritas and drinking Mexican beer in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, may not know the real meaning of Mexico’s national holiday.

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the victory of Mexican forces, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín, over French forces in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862.

In the United States, the holiday is observed in recognition of Mexican heritage and pride. Many Americans are under the misconception that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day. That date is actually Sept. 16 and is the most important patriotic national holiday in Mexico.

Party-goers at El Ranchito listened to the sounds of mariachis as the Cuervo and Dos Equis girls mingled among the crowd, serving beer with free shots of tequila and passing out company giveaways.

Manager Michael Alcantara said that’s what makes El Ranchito’s Cinco de Mayo celebration special.

“We have lots of presents for the customers,” Alcantara said. “They like the drinks and all the girls coming around with free T-shirts, hats and tequila shots.”
