With the Orange Coast League championship on the line, Costa Mesa High’s baseball team came up short, losing to Calvary Chapel, 4-3, at Vanguard University Wednesday.

The Mustangs had to watch as the Eagles celebrated their third straight league crown. Costa Mesa (15-12, 8-4 in league) was vying for its first league championship since 1978.

It came close to capturing the title in the fifth inning. But the Mustangs let a great opportunity slip way. They had the bases loaded with no out, but did not score any runs. They went on to suffer their third straight league loss, but still have the new season of the CIF playoffs next week.
