CIF playoff berth on the line at Costa Mesa today
An 11-3 victory over its rival gave Costa Mesa High’s softball team a boost.
The Mustangs plan to ride the momentum into today’s game that’s for a CIF Southern Section playoff berth.
Costa Mesa (11-10, 5-3 in league) plays host to Calvary Chapel (9-9, 5-3) at 3:15 p.m. in the crucial Orange Coast League matchup. Calvary Chapel appears to have the upper hand based on games this season. The Mustangs lost to Calvary Chapel, 9-1, on April 18 and, 12-2, on April 30. But Costa Mesa showed what it’s capable of Friday.
After the Mustangs dismantled Estancia, Costa Mesa Coach Marcus Franco said he wanted his players to get a taste of playoff action.
Costa Mesa has not reached the playoffs since 2003 when the Mustangs won their first league title.
