CdM’s Mang to step down

Corona del Mar High boys’ tennis coach Tim Mang announced Thursday that he will be stepping down at the end of the season.

Mang, a 66-year-old walk-on coach, has been coaching the Sea King boys since 1993. He also coached the CdM girls’ tennis team from 1995 through 1998.

“It’s time [to retire],” said Mang, a Newport Beach resident. “I’m getting old. You just know sometimes. And the foundation will keep me busy.”

Mang said he still plans to stay on as executive director of the National High School Tennis All-American Foundation, and will continue to organize the National High School Tennis All-American tournament that he started nine years ago.

Corona del Mar Athletic Director Paul Orris had no comment on Mang stepping down, saying he wanted to wait until the end of the season to address the matter.

“There may be some changes, but we want to not be a distraction to the team and wait until the season is over,” Orris said.

The Sea Kings defeated Servite, 11-7, in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs on Thursday.

Mang, a Newport Harbor High alumnus, has been coaching high school tennis since 1972. The first 17 years of that span were at Edison High in Huntington Beach, where he won nine league championships. He also coached at Orange Coast College in 1990, when the Pirates finished No. 5 in the state. He still taught at Edison until retiring about five years ago, he said.

At Corona del Mar, Mang’s boys’ teams have amassed an overall record of 330-50 and won league 10 times. CdM won the CIF championship in 1999, 2001 and 2003.

Mang also led the CdM girls to a CIF title in 1997.

The Sea King boys also won the prestigious All-American tournament three straight years, from 2002 through 2004.

Mang, who was named the National High School Tennis Coach of the Year in 2006, said he has no plans to stop watching tennis.

“I’ll still be able to come watch the big matches here [at CdM],” he said. “I’ll be able to watch [UC Irvine-bound senior] Fabian [Matthews] at UCI, watch my former players at Ojai.”

As for his plans for the future, he said he will enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

“I’ll be enjoying the discount movies in Fashion Island for seniors, and staying in shape by walking my dog,” Mang said.
