LONG BEACH — The Sage Hill School boys’ 400-yard freestyle relay team placed fifth in the championship final and set a new school record Thursday night at Belmont Plaza.

Andrew Dorne, Ryan Barth, Jake Blitzer and Beau Caillouette finished the race in 3 minutes, 23.96 seconds. Dorne won the consolation final of the 500 free in 4:55.92, a personal-best and another school record. The Sage 200 medley relay, consisting of Stephen Krieger, Danny Harold, Dorne and Caillouette, also won the consolation final in 1:45.19.

Krieger won the consolation final of the 100 backstroke, in 57.01 seconds, while Dorne placed 14th in the 200 individual medley in 2:04.81. The 200 free relay team of Krieger, Harold, Barth and Blitzer swam a 1:35.95 for 15th place. Harold finished 16th in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.20), as did Blitzer in the 100 butterfly (57.30).

Sage Hill’s boys tied for 10th overall as a team.

On the girls’ side, the Sage Hill 400 free relay team of Dylan Conroy, Jordan Smith-Newman, Cameron Cline and Sarah Wesley also set a school record. They placed 12th in 4:00.79.

Division II preliminaries

LONG BEACH — Estancia High senior Shea Kopp qualified for the consolation finals in both the 100-yard backstroke and 50 freestyle Thursday at Belmont Plaza.

Kopp finished the 100 back in 59.72 seconds, qualifying 10th, and qualified 11th in the 50 free (24.88). The Division II finals are Saturday.

No Costa Mesa High swimmers finished in the top 16 to qualify for either the championship or consolation finals. Senior Sam Edman was the top Mustang finisher, in 20th in both the 200 free (1 minute, 46.88 seconds) and 500 free (4:52.55).

BASEBALL

Corona del Mar 2, Irvine 1

IRVINE — Senior Bret Weinberger saved his best pitching performance of the season for the season finale, throwing a complete game to help the Sea Kings avoid a last-place finish in the Pacific Coast League.

The win, which halted a seven-game losing streak for CdM (9-16, 4-8 in league) was also keyed by an RBI double from senior Kevin Holland and a RBI single by junior Michael Bloom.

Weinberger scattered seven hits, stranding 10 Irvine runners on base. He struck out one in his first complete game this season.

Irvine finished 13-11, 3-9.

UC Irvine-bound senior DJ Crumlich took the loss for the Vaqueros.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior RJ D’Cruz went two for two with a run scored for the Sailors in their season finale Thursday.

Sophomore Dillan Freiberg was two for three with a double and an RBI for Newport Harbor, which ended the season 8-13-1, 4-11 in the Sunset League.

Senior Jacob McCann doubled, senior Patrick Brennan finished with a hit and senior Erik Bonn added two RBIs for the Sailors.

CERRITOS — Sophomore Sadie Hoeschen went four for four with two doubles and a stolen base in the Lightning’s final Academy League game Thursday.

Sage Hill (8-13, 6-5 in league) finished fourth in league and will miss the playoffs.

Senior Katie McKeon went three for three with five stolen bases and she scored three runs.
