LONG BEACH — Orange Coast College’s Brittany Bass and Brittnie Furuvald advanced to today’s semifinals in women’s doubles after posting two victories Friday at El Dorado Park.

Bass and Furuvald defeated a DeAnza team, 6-2, 6-1, in the Round of 16. They then dispatched a Santa Rosa duo, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The final will take place shortly after the end of the semifinal matches.

In singles, Bass and Furuvald both lost in the quarterfinals.

Bass won in the Round of 16, defeating a Mt. San Jacinto player, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, but then lost in the quarterfinals to Foothill’s Kunkanda Phukchampa, 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.

Furuvald a Monterey Peninsula player, 6-2, 6-4. She then lost to Saddleback’s Erina Hunt, 6-3, 4-6, 2-6.

Big West Multi-Event

Championships

NORTHRIDGE — UC Irvine’s Trent Richert is in fifth place after the first day of the decathlon in the Big West Conference Multi-Event Championships at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track Complex.

Richert scored 3,429 points in Friday’s five events. The Anteaters’ Kyle Peterson is in seventh place with 3,401 points and Eric Nyberg is 10th with 3,110.

Chris Richardson of Long Beach State leads with a total of 3,988 points.

Richert’s marks Friday were 11.53 in the 100 meters, 22-0 1/4 in the long jump, 38-0 in the shot put, 5-10 3/4 in the high jump and 51.90 in the 400 meters.

Peterson recorded marks of 11.26 in the 100 meters, 20-7 3/4 in the long jump, 37-11 1/4 in the shot put, 6-1 1/4 in the high jump and 52.85 in the 400 meters.

Nyberg’s marks were 11.92 in the 100, 21-1 1/4 in the long jump, 33-4 3/4 in the shot put, 6-2 1/4 in the high jump and 55.98 in the 400.

The final five events are scheduled for today.

Day leads in heptathlon

NORTHRIDGE — Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day is three events away from winning a Big West title in the heptathlon.

The Cal Poly San Luis Obispo senior finished the day Friday leading with 3,418 points after the first day of competition at the Big West Multi-Event Championships.

Day recorded a personal-best in the 100 hurdles at 14.57 seconds, for 899 points. She posted six feet in the high jump for 1,016 points, 37-6 in the shot put for 623 points and 25.07 in the 200 meters for 880 points.

Last year, Day had 3,201 points after the first four events, putting her on pace to beat her 2007 tally of 5,244.
