TRACK AND FIELD CIF PRELIMINARIES

Division II

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor High senior Rex Nelson qualified first in the 1,600 meters and the 3,200 at the CIF Southern Section Division II preliminaries Saturday at Moorpark High.

His time of 4 minutes, 17.01 seconds in the 1,600 and 9:18.52 were both personal bests for Nelson, who said he will attempt to run both events at the CIF Division II finals Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

“I’m excited,” Nelson said by phone from Moorpark. “And I think I have more in me, too.”

Sophomore Cecil Whiteside qualified fifth in the boys’ shot put (55 feet, 4 inches) and seventh in the discus (160-3), while senior teammate Nate Talbot qualified fourth in the discus (163-4).

In the girls’ 3,200, Sailors sophomore Erica Pearson (fourth in 11:00.59) and senior Sophia Ditty (fifth in 11:05.03) qualified, while junior Desiree Alexander is the first alternate (10th in 11:19.47).

Senior Michael Puncel qualified eighth in the boys’ 1,600 in 4:21.47 and senior Cassidy Gayner qualified eighth in the girls’ 300 hurdles (45.86) to round out the Tars’ qualifiers.

Division III

DOWNEY — Corona del Mar senior Thomas Dialynas qualified first in the boys’ 1,600 meters Saturday at Downey High to advance to the CIF Southern Section Division III finals.

Dialynas’ top time was four minutes, 20.80 seconds.

Senior Shelby Buckley qualified first in her heat in the 1,600 with a time of 5:04.47 and Allison Damon qualified third in 5:05.26. Buckley won her heat in the 800 with a time of 2:17.96. Tina Theriot won her 800 heat in 2:19.37, and Kim Condino was second in her 800 heat (2:18.90).

Buckley, Theriot, Claire Schmidt, and Sarah Craig qualified second in the 1,600 relay (4:02.27).

Junior Blaine Bolus qualified second in the triple jump with a mark of 45 feet, 11 3/4 inches and fourth in the long jump (21-7).

Division IV

CARPINTERIA — Junior distance runner Cait Williamson was the only girl from Sage Hill to qualify for the CIF Southern Section Division IV finals in preliminaries held Saturday at Carpenteria High.

Williamson qualified seventh in the 800 meters with a time of two minutes, 22.57 seconds. She also qualified seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 5:17.81.

Junior Justin Stroud, sophomore Andy Multari, sophomore Lion Wintemute, and senior Connor Rose qualified ninth in the 1,600 relay (3:35.52).

Rose qualified sixth in the 800 in 1:59.85 and Wintemute was ninth in the 400 in 51.42.

Senior Cody Gates qualified third in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, eight inches.

The Lightning will compete at the CIF Division IV finals Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
