Three Edison athletes captured CIF Southern Section individual titles and set records in the process at Friday’s CIF Southern Section Division I swimming finals at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach.

Junior Tom Shields broke his own Division I record in the 100-yard breaststroke (47.57) and also won the 200-yard freestyle (1:36.52). Sophomore Cindy Tran swam to a new county record-time in winning the girls’ 100-yard backstroke with a personal-best of 53.61. Senior Yasi Jahanshahi won the girls’ 100-yard butterfly in a county-best time of 54.46.

Edison’s foursome of Tran, freshman Sarah Moss, Jahanshahi and junior Monique Wilson, won the girls’ 200-yard medley relay in 1:46.08 to start the division finals and in one of the final events of the competition, the Edison team of freshman Alli Gillespie, junior Kiersten Colesen, Jahanshahi and Tran, won the 400-yard free relay in 3:29.86.

Both relay times are tops in the county this year.

Edison’s girls’ finished second in the team standings to Mission Viejo which won its 16th-straight CIF-SS title.

  Track and field

Several athletes advanced from last weekend’s prelims action to the CIF-SS track and field championships finals Saturday at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Field events begin at 10:30 a.m. and running events start at 1 p.m.

Among the key finishes by local athletes in Division II, Huntington Beach junior Allison Koressel finished in a four-way tie for first-place in the girls’ pole vault (10-feet-6), Edison junior Hillary Hayes (5:01.66) won the girls’ 1,600 and was third (10:52.35) in the 3,200 and Edison senior Ryan Simioni finished in a seven-way tie for first-place (14-0) in the boys’ pole vault.

  Boys’ tennis

Marina reached the second round of the CIF-SS Division I playoffs where it was eliminated by No. 2-seed Santa Barbara 13-5 on Saturday.

The Vikings had opened the playoffs on May 8 with a 14-4 home court win over San Clemente. At the first two singles spots, junior Dominik Schubert and freshman Parker Glore earned sweeps and senior Deondre Moss and freshman Daniel Cancilla went 3-0 at No. 1 doubles for the Vikings.

“I thought everybody did a great job,” Marina Coach Bruce Beutler said of the victory. “The kids were focused and played as a team. Everyone played very, very well.”

Marina, which won the Sunset League title, finished the year 19-3.

  Baseball

Orange tagged host Ocean View for three runs in both the first and second innings and rode that fast start to a 6-2 victory that earned the Panthers a share of the Golden West League title with the Seahawks.

Nick Schulenburg had two hits for Ocean View.

Edison wrapped up second-place in the Sunset League by winning their final four games. The Chargers concluded that stretch by rallying for a 7-5 home win over rival Fountain Valley.

Sophomore Josh Lesinski, senior Kyle Higashioka and junior Donald Sneed all homered for Edison who came back from a 4-0 deficit.

Higashioka, freshman Eric Snyder and junior Chris Czerniachowski all doubled.

“It’s a great way to end the year, beating our rival twice,” Edison Coach Steve Lambright said. “These kids really won some big games to end the regular season.”

Marina concluded its season with a 9-7 Sunset League victory over visiting Newport Harbor.

The Vikings erupted for seven first-inning runs and then held off a late rally by the Sailors who scored four times in the top of the seventh.

Senior Kyle Myers hit a solo home run and also doubled for the Vikings. Senior Ryan Donohue, sophomore Chad Lewis and junior J.J. Baccari each also doubled.

Senior Michael Nakamura got the win.

Huntington Beach ended Sea View League play and its season with an 8-1 road win over Woodbridge at Windrow Park.

Senior Calvin Drummond notched the win and senior Randy Guite doubled for the Oilers.

  Softball

Ocean View put the finishing touches on a perfect Golden West League season by edging host Orange 2-1 on sophomore Autumn Martinez’s home run in the top of the ninth.

Sophomore Holli Floetker surrendered just three hits to the Panthers to improve her record to 13-1.

Ocean View, which went 10-0 in league, finished 24-1 overall and ended the regular season on a 14-game win streak.

Huntington concluded regular season play with a 6-5 home win over Foothill at Worthy Park in a game that pitted teams fighting to stay alive for postseason playoff consideration. The Oilers scored five runs in the first inning where sophomore Meghan White singled in two of those runs.

Huntington scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth when Driver singled home Allison Dufault who had started Huntington’s at-bat with a single. Sophomore Lauren Stuhr also singled twice for Huntington.

Huntington won three of its final four league games.

“I’m so proud of the girls,” Huntington Coach Rachelle Vandiver said. “We played strong at the start and end of the year and now we’re excited to be going to CIF.”

Host Edison had just two hits but used one of them, a fourth-inning triple by sophomore Courtney Gonzales, to produce the game’s lone run which led to a 1-0 win over visiting Fountain Valley in the Sunset League finale for both teams.

Junior Stephanie Engle earned her sixth win of the year and the victory assured Edison a third-place league finish and CIF berth.

Marina scored the final four runs of its Sunset League finale against Newport Harbor and went on to claim a 4-1 victory over the visiting Sailors. Sophomore Shannon Simmons doubled for the Vikings and freshman Jamie Sullivan got the win.
