MOBILE, Ala. — The No. 4-seeded Lions’ season ended in the NAIA semifinals at the hands of top-seeded Auburn.

Vanguard (23-5) received its only win in doubles, where the No. 2 pair of senior Jelena Jovic and All-Region sophomore Betyel Tesfa won, 8-5.

But Auburn (33-0) won two other doubles matches and also won each of the three completed singles matches to clinch the victory.

The 23 wins marks the most for Vanguard since 2005.

Singles – Jurcovicova (VU) lost to Sescioreanu, 3-6, 2-6; Tesfa (VU) DNF vs. Dadakhodjaeva; Jovic (VU) lost to Veverkova, 4-6, 2-6; Donkervoort (VU) DNF vs. Sienkob; Valingsten (VU) lost to Zuzulova, 1-6, 3-6; Amstad (VU) DNF vs. Berthe.

Doubles – Jurcovicova-Donkervoort (VU) lost to Sescioreanu-Veverkova, 3-8; Jovic-Tesfa (VU) def. Dadakhodjaeva-Lysak, 8-5; Valingsten-Amstad (VU) lost to Berthe-Dunlavy, 2-8.

MEN’S GOLF

NCAA East Regional

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The UC Irvine men’s golf team shot a one-under total of 283 Thursday and is in 13th after the first day.

Top-ranked Georgia is first at 19-under 265, Augusta State is second at 273 and Southern Methodist is third at 276 in the 27-team field at Council Fire Golf Club.

Hudson Swafford of Georgia and Henrik Norlander from Augusta State are tied for the individual lead after shooting six-under totals of 65 in the opening round on the par-71 course that measures 6,961 yards.

UCI’s John Chin is tied for seventh place at four-under 67. The 2008 Big West Conference Player of the Year had seven birdies, one bogey and a double-bogey Thursday.

Sean Shahi is 33rd after a one-under 70, Kenny Kim is 46th at even-par 71, while Tim Cha and Max Greil are tied for 107th place after each posted a four-over 75.
