Huntington Beach cuts down water use

The city Public Works department is cutting down on its watering, a move that would save more than $87,000 each year.

On all 707 acres of parks and landscaping in the city, sprinklers and other irrigation systems will be programmed to turn on one fewer day per week. That means most will only be operating two or three times a week.

In addition to the savings, the program is meant to encourage residents to cut down on their own water usage as well, officials said.

According to city staff, cutting down by a day is expected to save on water consumption outside by 20%. That reduction comes out to around 47 million gallons a year.

In Huntington Beach, most plants and lawns only need to be watered two to three times each week, according to city officials.
