CIF SOUTHERN SECTION INDIVIDUALS:

COSTA MESA — Corona del Mar High senior Fabian Matthews advanced to the Round of 16 in the CIF Southern Section boys’ tennis Individuals held Friday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The UC Irvine-bound Matthews, the Pacific Coast League champion and top-seeded player in singles at the site, had a bye in the first round. He defeated Ulifef Banos of Corona, 6-0, 6-0, in the second round and Junya Yoshida of Northwood, 6-1, 6-2 in the third round.

The tournament resumes with the Round of 16 on Friday at 11:30 a.m. at the Seal Beach Tennis Center.

Other Newport-Mesa entries into the CIF Individuals were eliminated Friday. Estancia High senior Bradley Fisher, the two-time Orange Coast League singles champion, defeated Lewis Hung of Sunny Hills, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round.

Fisher, who plans to play tennis at Orange Coast College, lost to Curtis Wu of Valencia, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round.

Newport Harbor High senior John Hutchinson defeated Sage Hill junior Kevin Wang in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. He then was losing to Warren Hardy of Dana Hills, 3-6, 1-2, but Hardy had to default due to injury.

Hutchinson then fell in the third round, 6-3, 6-1, to Justin Thompson of Troy.

In doubles, Newport Harbor juniors Daron Arnold and Josh Tuz won, 6-1, 6-3 in the first round. The Sunset League doubles champs then lost a tough second-round match, 7-5, 5-7, 9-11.

For Sage Hill, junior Troy Astorino fell in the first round of singles to Yoshida, 6-1, 6-0. In doubles, Andrew Yun and Andrew Kurzwell lost in the first round to Lawrence Yiang and Greg Drunkenmiller of Sunny Hills, 6-0, 6-0.

The Lightning tandem of Alex Koeberle and Grant Gerdau also lost in the first round to Deondre Moss and Dominik Schubert of Marina, 6-2, 6-0.

Coach A.G. Longoria said the six-player Sage Hill contingent was the most the school has ever qualified.
