Jones Cup coming soon

The Big Canyon Country Club will try for its sixth Jones Cup championship — and second straight — when the ninth annual event takes place July 8 at Newport Beach Country Club.

The site, which also features the Toshiba Classic, will also have Santa Ana, Mesa Verde and Newport Beach Country Clubs vying to become the Jones Cup champ.

The winners are also known to have ultimate bragging rights for the rest of the year.

Rosters of each club are coming about as club championship events have yet to be played at some of the clubs.

Last year, Big Canyon scored 65 and edged defending champion Mesa Verde and Newport Beach, which both had 66.

Warren Caves’ birdie on No. 18 at Big Canyon proved to be huge and the difference for the Big Canyon squad.

Santa Ana finished fourth at 68.
