Cool jazz in the heat

Space under palm trees was at a premium and cardboard fans bearing sponsors’ logos flapped rapidly and continuously as temperatures reached more than 85 degrees at the Newport Beach Jazz Festival on Sunday.

On its last day, more than 5,000 people set up lawn chairs and beach towels on the golf course of the Hyatt Regency, coordinators estimated. Sunday’s lineup on the main outdoor stages included performances from Jesse Cook, Euge Groove, Norman Brown’s Summer Storm, Guitars and Sax, and Brian Culbertson.

Champagne, wine and Cajun food were sold at booths around the grounds to the patrons who paid more than $50 per person to attend. In order to deal with the long lines of cars, the hotel had to direct people to park at nearby Corona del Mar High School and the Newport Dunes resort and shuttle them to the festival.
