Big West Championships

NORTHRIDGE — Senior Dayne Comrie and sophomore Alisha Misiaita led UC Irvine Saturday in the final day of competition for the Big West title at Cal State Northridge’s Matador Track Complex.

Comrie won the 400 meters in 46.28 seconds, as he improved on his No. 3 time in UCI history. He qualified for the NCAA West Regional in that event earlier this season.

He finished third in the 200 meters in an NCAA regional-qualifying time of 21.17, eighth-fastest in the Anteater record book. Comrie also ran legs on UCI’s second-place 1,600 relay and third-place 4x100 relay.

Sophomore Tim Murphy placed second in the 800 with a time of 1:51.89.

Kevin Palmer finished seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (15.01) and the 400-meter hurdles (53.96). Sky Johnston was seventh in the 5,000 meters (15:19.02).

The Anteater men finished fifth with 83 points as Long Beach State was first with 185.

In women’s competition, Misiaita won the shot put with a mark of 49 feet, 11 1/4 inches, and she was second in the discus throw at 154-5 for the third-best mark in Anteater history. Samantha Costantini finished seventh in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:40.41.

The UCI women’s team finished eighth with 42 points as Northridge scored 189 points to win its third straight title.

Championships

NORWALK — Orange Coast College freshman Cassie Mitchell won the state title in the 3,000 meter steeplechase Saturday at Cerritos College.

Mitchell finished in 10 minutes, 59.39 seconds, bettering her first-place seed time from the Southern California Championships on May 10 by nearly 12 seconds. She also finished third in the 800 meters Saturday, in 2:18.89.

OCC’s Crystal Reed finished a strong second in the 5,000 meters, in 18:07.81. The time beat her seed time by nearly 18 seconds. Reed also finished second in the 10,000 meter run in 39:16.29.

Brenda Finney was fourth in the 400 hurdles, in 1:03.19.

Top finishers for the Pirates men included Andres Rossini, fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 166 feet, 8 inches. Stephen Ruby was also fourth in the javelin, with his mark of 190 feet, 1 inch.
